BCi In-Motion Belt Scale System

Ideal for numerous functions from mining, bulk material blending or load-out applications, Rice Lake’s rugged BCi belt scale can handle it all.

Featuring a 10,000 ton per hour capacity and up to 1,200 feet per minute belt speed, the BCi belt scale can quickly deliver both materials and accuracy thanks to real-time statistical data forwarded through a variety of network options.

Built to handle conveyor widths from 18" to 72", the BCi features four laterally opposed shear beam load cells mounted in a unitized single idler scale frame. A signal trim TuffSeal™ environmentally sealed junction box is expandable for multi-idler applications. The non-contact proximity sensor encoder on an 8" speed wheel helps ensure the operation remains running smoothly, while recording data.

When used with a 920i® HMI programmable controller, the functionality of the BCi belt scale is even greater. Abundant processing power and expanded networking capabilities enable the integrator to easily communicate with printers, PCs, remote displays, ERP systems, PLCs and other peripheral equipment. Additionally, the large, back-lit LCD graphical display can show rate and speed time displayed by the hour, minute or second and measurements in feet or meters, as well as showing the unit rate in tons, pounds, kilograms, metric tons or long tons.

Reigniting the Coal Industry --- Innovative Belt Scale System Modernizes Ancient Process

Application: The durable BCi Belt Scale System gives coal mines and power plants accurate, dependable information and control in production, loading and batching operations. The versatile 920i® indicator is programmed to gather, analyze and deliver real-time information from multiple underground conveyors, truck scales and systems.

Benefits: The true applied weight to the idler is captured with minimal surface area for build-up of debris, improving accuracy and dependability while handling up to 10,000 tons per hour. Open source code and multiple inputs allow programmer to customize system to any application.

The southeast area of St. Louis farmland is hemmed by black-topped two lane roads and strips of river and lake. Many of those long narrow lakes are footprints left by open pit coal mines, and 200 feet under that quilt top is one of the richest veins of coal in the world.

That is, it was a rich vein until cheap oil and tighter EPA standards made it too expensive to mine and process. Power plants and industry shipped in cleaner-burning Western “compliance” coal. Add the increasing cost of transporting Western fuel and you have the spark that has reignited Illinois Basin mining activity.

Belt ScaleThe powerful teamwork of belt scale and indicator, the Rice Lake BCi In-Motion Belt Scale System, is now in action at the Mine. The first conveyor is the slope belt which conveys run of mine coal directly from deep underground. The second is positioned after a surge pile to convey coal to the preparation plant at a constant feed rate. The belt scale information is transmitted through fiber optics to a mine monitor system at the central office. The 920i indicator is customized to print three times a day to compare each shift’s production.

The chief electrical and belt line engineers at the mine, now have more information about tonnage from each belt scale, as well as from each shift. When they survey the waste pile and measure the inseam cut, they have another benchmark to measure production, percent of waste and yield from tonnage.

Two of the belt scales are high speed conveyors running around 900 fpm. These mines can’t afford to have these belt scales shut down, and the Rice Lake Belt scale keeps them running smooth.
