If you want to buy the right scale and avoid buying the wrong scale, this episode is for you.<\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s start with exactly what is a price computing scale?<\/p>\n<p>Kevin Lamberth (01:01)<br \/>A price computing scale is like those scales you see at the farmers market. You&#8217;ve probably seen where it&#8217;s sits on the countertop and it&#8217;s got a display on the front and the back, and it&#8217;s usually battery powered, usually goes to about thirty pounds capacity, and it&#8217;s legal for trade.<\/p>\n<p>Erica (01:20)<br \/>How do you use a price computing scale?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Kevin Lamberth (01:24)<br \/>You would place your items on the scale that you want to weigh. Like say you&#8217;re buying a bucket of strawberries, and you would place the bucket of strawberries on, you would enter the price per pound that you want to charge, and then the scale will calculate the total price, and you&#8217;ll see that on both the front side and the back side.<\/p>\n<p>Erica (02:11)<br \/>All right. The term legal for trade is thrown around around a lot, is thrown around a lot. But most people don&#8217;t know what that exactly means. What does it really mean?<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/w_Di-XeqeHI?si=CdRVJb98keNK9l4H\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Kevin Lamberth (02:21)<br \/>Yes, in almost every state you should have a legal for trade price computing scale just to meet the requirements of your state, but also it would be the right thing to do both for you and the customer so that there&#8217;s confidence that the scale is accurate and you&#8217;re getting what you&#8217;re paying for. There&#8217;s a lot of different terminology that people use with legal for trade, certified, NTEP approved. But with a price computing scale, they&#8217;re supposed to be legal for trade, which basically it would mean that the manufacturer sends the scale to a lab and it&#8217;s tested. And it has to meet certain requirements and once it does that, it earns a certificate of conformance number. And every price computing scale that&#8217;s legal for trade, if you look at it on the side, usually there&#8217;s a COC number somewhere on it. And that would mean that it&#8217;s an NTEP legal for trade scale. And then beyond that, there&#8217;s some some states want you to actually have it put into service by a local company. And then you can and then you can look it up online and confirm that that it&#8217;s has an active certificate.<\/p>\n<p>Erica (03:43)<br \/>What capacity and readability do most produce sellers actually need?<\/p>\n<p>Kevin Lamberth (03:49)<br \/>Most sellers usually have a 30 pound capacity, and that usually works for most people. if you&#8217;re selling strawberries or something like that, 30 pounds works. However, if you&#8217;re weighing frozen yogurt by the ounce, you might go with a 15 pound capacity. If you&#8217;re weighing watermelons you might go with a 60 pound capacity.<\/p>\n<p>Erica: So farmers markets aren&#8217;t exactly gentle environments. Can price computing scales be used outdoors? Can they handle outdoor use?<\/p>\n<p>Kevin Lamberth (05:03)<br \/>Outdoor use in good weather should be fine. However, ninety nine percent of price computing scales are not designed to get wet or be washed down. So you want to have the scale protected in case there&#8217;s any rain or anything. But just outdoors in the open as far as clear weather, it would be fine.<\/p>\n<p>Erica (05:19)<br \/>All right. So once someone buys a price price computing scale, what happens next? How often does the scale need to be calibrated or inspected?<\/p>\n<p>Kevin Lamberth (05:29)<br \/>Well, normally you&#8217;d want to have the price computing scale checked, usually once a year and usually once the scale&#8217;s put into service, that&#8217;s good for the first year. And then after that, usually the state will check your scale. I&#8217;ve always thought it was a good idea to take your scale to your scale company before you&#8217;re going to use it each year. Like, let&#8217;s say your business really ramps up in the spring. So I would recommend taking your scale to the scale company in January or February and go ahead and get it checked, make sure it&#8217;s accurate. Maybe get a new battery for it, or a new power cord, or maybe a new keypad. That way you&#8217;re all set and ready to go for the busy season at the farmers market.<\/p>\n<p>Erica (06:19)<br \/>Okay, good advice. What happens if a scale fails inspection?<\/p>\n<p>Kevin Lamberth (06:25)<br \/>Well, if the produce scale fails inspection, you&#8217;ll usually take it to the scale company and we&#8217;ll look at it, and if it&#8217;s something simple, just like being recalibrated, it won&#8217;t be that that costly. But if it&#8217;s something more catastrophic, then you may just have to buy a new scale. But that&#8217;s that&#8217;s something we&#8217;ll have to determine at the time of inspection.<\/p>\n<p>Erica (07:33)<br \/>All right. Next question a lot of vendors move between markets. Can they use the same scale everywhere?<\/p>\n<p>Kevin Lamberth (07:41)<br \/>Yes, you can take the scale with you. A lot of vendors do operate in different cities. Maybe on a weekday they&#8217;ll be in one place and then the weekend they&#8217;ll be at a couple of other places. And that&#8217;s fine as long as you carefully move the scale from location to location and don&#8217;t just throw the scale in the car. Because a lot of times that&#8217;s where the calibration gets messed up is when you start abusing the scale during transport or storage.<\/p>\n<p>Erica (08:08)<br \/>What are the key features to look for when buying a legal for trade scale for use at the farmers market?<\/p>\n<p>Kevin Lamberth (08:08)<br \/>You want to look at the capacity that you&#8217;re going need, depending on what you&#8217;re weighing. You want to look at the power. Do you need battery power? Do you need any features like RS-232 serial port for connecting a label printer?\u00a0Also you need to look at the size of the platform or the size of the scale itself because if you&#8217;ve got a small table at a produce stand, you don&#8217;t need a huge scale taking up half your table. So you need to factor that in too. And of course you look at price also when you&#8217;re making a purchase.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Erica (08:59)<br \/>What about the scale manufacturer? Why would does that matter?<\/p>\n<p>Kevin Lamberth (09:09)<br \/>Yes the scale manufacturer matters. You want to choose a scale that has adequate US distribution with with real technicians and actual spare parts that are located in the United States. This is important because there&#8217;s a lot of scales being dumped into the US market now that I don&#8217;t think have adequate stock or adequate technicians or anything. They just dump them in the market with a low price.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Erica (09:37)<br \/>What are some of the mistakes you see with produce scale buyers making? What are the mistakes they&#8217;re making when buying a scale?<\/p>\n<p>Kevin Lamberth (09:41)<br \/>Well, I number one, they they focus entirely on price. And That&#8217;s important, but you need to also look at the features and the manufacturer and the reputation. and I think that&#8217;s that&#8217;s equally important. And I would say contact your local scale company too. Because they have experience and they know what scales work and what scales last. It&#8217;s no good to buy a scale that&#8217;s fifty dollars or a hundred dollars cheaper if it&#8217;s gonna fail six months from now or a year from now!\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Erica (10:37)<br \/>Okay. And let&#8217;s wrap up with cost. How much do digital price computing scales cost?<\/p>\n<p>Kevin Lamberth (10:45)<br \/>Well, when I&#8217;ve looked it up recently, you can find them for anywhere from less than $200 to around $400 or so. But you tend to get what you pay for in that breakdown. So, the lower cost two hundred dollar ones have less warranty, less features, that kind of thing. You get more value with a CAS S2000 JR which has label printer ability and a longer warranty.<\/p>\n<p>Erica (11:22)<br \/>All right. Good to know. All right, these don&#8217;t always get asked directly, but they come up constantly. Can I just use a scale until somebody says something?<\/p>\n<p>Kevin Lamberth (11:34)<br \/>You can, but eventually you&#8217;re goning to get inspected I&#8217;m assuming you mean like a non legal for trade scale? Well, you want to be up front and make sure you&#8217;re legal and and doing everything right because eventually you&#8217;re going to get reprimanded or shut down if you&#8217;re not careful.<\/p>\n<p>Erica (11:55)<br \/>Next, I only sell a little.
