Real World Truck Scale Automation Example

By | July 16, 2025

BTek is fast becoming an industry leader in truck scale automation and kiosks. Recently B-TEK Systems group wrapped up a large installation at a waste facility in California. The setup features:

(3) inbound SKYNET 2050 Self Service Kiosks for garbage trucks
(1) tunnel entry and exit Kiosk for tractor-trailers
(3) SuperBright2 Remote Displays
(3) RFID readers, intercoms and SuperBright2 scale traffic signals.

How does the Scale Work?

When a full garbage truck arrives, it pulls onto one of three inbound scales. An RFID tag in the truck’s window is scanned, which automatically populates the driver’s information and recalls the truck’s stored tare weight. B-TEK’s ScaleSoft Unattended Terminal Software communicates seamlessly with the customer’s internal system via API to send and receive data. The driver confirms the details, receives a printed ticket, then proceeds to dump the garbage inside the building. Once unloaded, the truck exits the property.

Tractor-trailers enter through a tunnel and stop at an entrance kiosk where an RFID reader scans the truck’s tag. The kiosk displays a “Thank you” message and prompts the driver to continue. A loader operator, using a tablet, activates a green light above one of the two tunnel scales to guide the truck.

Once on the 70×11 truck scale, the light turns red and the software captures a stable weight using the truck’s stored Tare. Garbage is then pushed through a chute into the trailer below. After filling, the loader captures the loaded weight and signals the driver to exit. At the exit kiosk, the RFID tag is scanned again, the driver collects a printed ticket and the truck is tarped and leaves the facility.

There you have it… The SKYNET 2050 Self-Service Kiosk puts the power of computer programming and flexibility together and packages it all into a compact, secure, unattended kiosk. It is pre-loaded with truck in/out software and ready to be connected to an NTEP-approved weight indicator at your scale house or remotely mounted in an enclosure at the scale.

Truck Scale Recommendations?

A system like this works great with the B-Tek Centurion Truck Scale. The Centurion is standard with 3/8″ steel tread plate or 8″ concrete deck surface. Safety sight rail is an available option (recommended).  Choose between analog or digital load cells.

The Centurion from B-TEK Scales is the only vehicle weighing system of its kind available. It’s the most robust scale on the market, utilizing tread plates that are 20% thicker than all standard scales in its class. Its durable construction is designed for long life in tough environments. And it easily interfaces with the Skynet 2050 kiosk for the ultimate in truck scale automation software.

This system can easily integrate into ScaleSoft scale software for more customized automated solutions. It features a 12.1″ touchscreen display that can easily be viewed in sunlight.

DEBRIS BUILD-UP PREVENTION
The unique weighbridge design of the Centurion features load cells positioned 10 inches from the end-wall. This positioning prevents dirt and debris from building up at the end-walls that may interfere with weighing.

EASE OF SERVICE
Large top access panels allow for the scale to be serviced from the top of the scale rather than underneath.

SELF-CLEANING LOAD CELLS
Rocker column load cells pivot during use by design to shake off debris from the load cells as they move.

EASE OF CLEANOUT
The weighbridge features large sectional and center cover plates. When removed, these plates provide easy cleanout access to areas under the scale where debris may build up.

STRONG AND DURABLE CONSTRUCTION
The Centurion features more steel than any standard scale on the market by utilizing thick beams and deck plates, providing the ultimate durability and strength.
